Omerga-3 fatty acids supplements again found of benefit in
the fight against high blood pressure (hypertension).
Hypertension is a major risk factor in the development of cardiovascular
disease and stroke and any positive effects that improving lifestyle and diet
has on blood pressure reduction reduces the incidence of this life threatening
disease.
A new meta-analysis of 70 studies published in the American Journal of Hypertension March 1014,
has found that supplementing with more than
2,000mg of omega 3 fatty acids (EPA+DHA
) found in fish oil, had a positive effect in reducing both systolic ( the
upper measurement) and Diastolic ( the lower measurement) blood pressure.
The strongest effects of the omega-3 supplements were
observed among untreated hypertensive subjects and these reductions were found
to be greater than reducing dietary salt or alcohol.
These results again show the importance of dietary omega-3
oils for cardiovascular health. Along with increasing exercise, maintenance of
ideal weight and a diet low in salt and alcohol, increases omega-3 dietary
intake from oily fish or supplements could be a positive step.
